As a young South African woman, entrenched in feminist academia, I find myself drawn time and time again to the concept of exhibitionism, not solely for its sexual implications, but as a form of liberation and personal expression. The act of consciously revealing oneself, not for the satisfaction of others but simply for the fulfillment of self, is an aspect of exhibitionism that often goes underappreciated. We live in a society that places undue emphasis on hiding and concealing our bodies, our desires, our identities — to the point of facilitating shame and repression. Yet, there exists a power in exhibitionism, a power that I have come to recognize and admire. Popular today, and rightly so, is the practice of reclaiming that power, transforming self-expression from a potential object of negative social gaze into instances of personal liberation.

One unparalleled moment I love to reflect on is a feminist performance art piece that I was part of in Johannesburg. Strutting in studded 👠 heels, the participants reveled in the raw, unadulterated public display of their bodies and thoughts, imprinting their presence and resistance in the public sphere – a sight so rare and so powerful, it not only heated up the chilly night air but left the audience 🥵. As the audience's 👀 gazed upon us, we interacted, we played, we engaged with their perceptions. We transcended the realm of the spectacle – we were not part of voyeuristic entertainment, but rather provoked discussions, challenged norms, and sparked a dialogue. We were women who dared to put our bodies and beliefs at the forefront, not just to be glanced at, but to be considered, contemplated 💭, and understood.

Through each stride, each provocative poetic recital, we felt a freedom unlike any other, a freedom that said, "This is my body, my voice, my self – unapologetically embracing the gaze, owning it, and influencing it". Some members of the audience reciprocated this understanding with knowing smiles and intense, appreciative looks. They blew air kisses 😘 in our direction, signaling their support. It was a poignant moment in my life, a celebration of the liberation that can stem from exhibitionism, the joy in asserting oneself openly, free of fear, embracing both vulnerability and strength. As I reflect on this, I continue to channel the electrifying energy from that night, carrying this deep understanding of exhibitionism as a freeing phenomenon into my feminist discourse.
